T3, also known as triiodothyronine, is a thyroid hormone. The production of which is stimulated by TSH. T4 is a precursor of T3 and the conversion is mediated by the activity of three deiodinase enzymes which are present in various tissues. The thyroid gland is also able to synthesise T3 directly. T3 has numerous effects in human including increasing the metabolic rate. Presence of T3 in the blood outside the normal range may indicate a thyroid problem.
