Galectin-3 belongs to the lectin family and is a carbohydrate binding protein. It is predominantly expressed in the colonic and intestinal epithelium. It is also found in the activated macrophages, fibroblasts, tumor cells. The marker is associated with cancer, inflammation and fibrosis, heart disease and stroke. There are various research papers which have suggested different uses of Galectin-3 as a diagnostic marker; a pre-surgical marker for thyroid carcinoma, cell proliferation stimulant, differentiation of benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms, analysis of colorectal cancer progression and Crohns disease. It also has the ability to chemo attract human blood monocytes and macrophages.
