Ketosis, a severe life threatening condition, can occur not only in diabetic patients but also in other conditions. Ketone bodies, where ß-Hydroxybutyrate is the most abundant one, are measured when ketoacidosis is suspected or to monitor treatment success.
ß-Hydroxybutyrate is measured with the help of the enzyme ß-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBDH). HBDH can catalyze the oxidative dehydrogenation of ß-Hydroxybutyrate. At the same time, NAD+ is reduced to NADH which then can react with a subtrate. The substrate then usually exhibits a change in colour that can then be quantified.
