BBI Solutions grows their team of software specialists providing Novarum™ mobile diagnostic solutions to customers

We are pleased to introduce 3 new members of the BBI Solutions team. The team deliver our revolutionary smartphone diagnostic software solution, Novarum™, empowering users to read and share the results of rapid tests from the point of care. This further investment will help to ensure excellent service quality and a consistent and dependable user experience to our clients.

We asked a few questions of our new colleagues about their roles and what software industry developments most excite them in 2020.


Owen Welch 

Quick background:

I’m 22 years old, and just graduated from Heriot Watt University in Computing and Electronics. I’m originally from Northern Ireland and came to Edinburgh to live the big city life. I enjoy playing board games and going bouldering at the weekends.

What my role involves:

I’ve been hired into the customer projects team here, which means I primarily work towards accomplishing tasks involving direct customer requests, like creating and changing User Interfaces and working with the other teams to ensure everything runs smoothly for our customers.

Software developments which most excite me:

I have always held a keen interest in efficiency, so areas in lower-level languages which are being sped up significantly excite me

My favourite developer joke:

A classic but still gets me every time, the definition of Recursion:

Conor Pirry

Quick background:

I began studying computing at 14 years old and have been fascinated since. I achieved top of class in secondary school computing two years in a row and graduated from UWS Computer Networking with a First-Class Degree. I am now studying reverse engineering and cyber security in my spare time and system administration.

What my role involves:

Ensuring employees can always access servers, ensuring the confidentiality of data, configuring servers to accommodate customer application portals, creating and deploying data backup solutions, supporting the app and portal teams with debugging and server (container) configuration.

Software developments which most excite me:

The exponential rise in artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as the security implications behind the IoT and how much it affects everyday users who might not be fully aware of those implications (see: The Ring home camera hack)

Calum McCune Profile

Quick background:

I studied Physics at Dundee University, after that I did an MPhil in Exoplanet Observation at the Open University in Milton Keynes. Having used Python for image processing of telescopic spectra I decided to look for work in software development.

What my role involves:

As part of the portal development team, I work on the respective web portals for client’s projects.

Software developments which most excite me:

Artificial Intelligence most excites me for its potential to find answers to problems that humans cannot.

Favourite developer-related joke:

A developer is asked: "go to the supermarket and pick up a loaf of bread, and while you are there get some milk"
They never came back
