Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced by the embryo after implantation and is used as a biomarker to determine if the female is pregnant. HCG is comprised of two subunits; the alpha subunit, which is in common with a number of other hormones and the beta subunit, which is specific to HCG. HCG can also be used as a tumour marker. Free beta HCG can be used in screening for Down's Syndrome and other trisomies during pregnancy.
